Read Across America Day is Coming Up!

Celebrate by Reading Your Favorite Book or Attending a Local Event

By Stephanie Duhon, Publisher February 23, 2018

My first grader loves to read. She's getting to the point where she is reading more fluently and quickly and she is devouring any book I put in front of her. She also still loves for me to read to her. We've recently been going through the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This was one of my favorite series as a child and I'm reading to her from the books I received when I was not much older than her.

Reading is a passion of mine that I am excited to pass down to my daughters. I read as often as I can and I read a variety of items, from historical fiction to non-fiction to magazines to history documents. My daughter says her goal is to read a chapter book without pictures all by herself. She's well on her way to accomplishing that goal.

Encouraging children to read is the goal of Read Across America, an annual event held on or around beloved children's author, Dr. Seuss', birthday to promote literacy.

This year it takes place on March 2, which is Dr. Seuss' birthday.

There are many schools participating in Read Across America with fun events and activities.

Want to celebrate with your little ones?

There are a couple of ways ... you can attend one of the two local events at the Barnes and Noble located at the Avenue.

Saturday, February 24 - 11 a.m. - Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss Storytime

Friday, March 2 - 6:30 p.m - Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration

Or you can throw your own party to celebrate Dr. Seuss with your kids and invite some neighbors or friends to join you. Click here for some fun craft and activity ideas.
