How a Week at Deer Run Camp Helped My Daughter Build Her Confidence

Ever since the last day of school, my 7-year-old has been asking when Deer Run Camp would begin. She had such an amazing experience last year (read more here), she couldn't wait to return this year. The verdict? She loved it even more!

Weather wise, she got the perfect week for outdoor fun. It was sunny, but not overly humid or hot. It also didn't rain at all the entire week, so she was able to experience every activity day camp has to offer and the list is endless! From archery to bb guns to pedal karts to lake activities, such as the aqua park and waterslide - there's no shortage of things for kids to do. My favorite aspect of these activities? They all build confidence and teach my girl new skills. She was so excited to learn how to use a bow and arrow and do the zipline all by herself.

The 5-day nondenominational Christian camp, located in Thompson's Station on 100 acres of gorgeous scenic wooded property, takes place Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (before and after care available) On the first day, you sign in your camper and walk over to the Fortress, where the day's activities begin and end, to meet her counselor for the week. At sign in, each camper receives a wristband to signify which group they are in for the week.

My daughter was in the sea foam green rabbit group and was thrilled to learn she had the same counselor as last year! She also saw a few familiar faces, which made it easy for her to feel comfortable. The ride home after picking her up each afternoon was filled with her chatter about that day's activities - she was especially proud to share moments where she overcame her fears.

Last year, it took her almost the whole week to try the zipline. She loved it after she finally tried it, but then was a bit nervous about doing the zipline again this year. It only took her one day this time thanks to how much her counselors and fellow campers encourage her and build her confidence.

Deer Run still has space available for upcoming week-long camps, but spots are filling up quickly. Day Camps are for ages 5 through completed 5th grade, Adventure Day Camps are for students who have completed grades 6-8 and Overnight Camps are for students who have completed grades 3-12.
