Tips for...er, from The Tooth Fairy!

By Crystal Hoffman, Murfreesboro Macaroni Kid February 24, 2020

“Mommy, mommy, I lost my first tooth!” -the words that I, as a parent, was not in the least bit ready for.I knew my oldest daughter, who was six at the time, had a few loose teeth, so I shouldn’t have been caught off guard.  But I was.Let’s just say that the tooth fairy’s first visit to our house was quite uneventful (and required us borrowing a dollar from a neighbor).  For future lost teeth, the tooth fairy will be ready!

The tooth fairy has some interesting beginnings in a variety of cultures and backgrounds.  We’ll just stick with the American version of the tooth fairy for today, though.  The tooth fairy, as we know her, was brought into popularity through a children’s book back in the 1920’s.  At first, the legend was obscure and didn’t stick well with American families.  That is, until Walt Disney made fairies a household character through his movies.

When I was growing up, a quarter was a standard tooth fairy gift, maybe the occasional dollar if we were lucky.Today’s children are, on average, receive considerably more at $3.70 per tooth.  Sheesh!

Regardless of how much your delegated tooth fairy gives (or doesn’t give), there are some fun ways the tooth fairy can get creative with her gift-giving.

Sparkly Dollars – glittery hairspray (the kind you buy at the party store) sprayed onto a dollar bill

Make a Tooth Fairy Plushie – this will make the night exchange much easier for the tooth fairy

Fairy Footprints – put tiny footprints on the window showing proof that the tooth fairy was there

Color Changing Water – place the tooth in a glass of water when your child goes to bed, after the tooth fairy comes, the water will “change colors”

Use Foreign Money – since the tooth fairy works internationally, this only makes sense that he/she would use money from around the world

What does your tooth fairy like to do at your house?  We’d love to know!
