“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “Mary Had a Little Lamb” are the two numbers I can play confidently on a piano, maybe even on a violin if I’m feeling ambitious. While I never had formal lessons to play the piano I did take lessons for the violin.  I never really seemed to enjoy playing my instrument though.  Practicing was always a chore and I genuinely loathed the time that I had to spend doing so.  Part of me was a bit sad when I played because I really wanted to find enjoyment in playing my violin.

Looking back, I think a big part of the reason why I did not particularly enjoy playing was because instruction was stale and rather boring.  My teachers were old and sometimes smelly.  My lesson time was always during recess and the room I went to for my lesson was right outside of the playground.  I think you can catch my drift here – I really did not like this method of instruction.

But times have changed and there are people out there today who genuinely love making music and teaching others how to do the same.  Ms. Rachel Perkins, the fabulous instructor and owner of Perkins Music Studio, seems to have it all figured out.  She uses music to connect children to their musical and educational potential and to connect families and the community through sharing joyful musical moments.  Ms. Rachel uses the “Let’s Play Music” program and her years of experience in music education to teach her clients in a warm and playful setting.  The techniques used include a full-body age-appropriate approach to vocal training and piano proficiency.

One parent, who was clearly impressed by the program, had this to say about “Let’s Play Music”: “They learn rhythms, chord progressions, to sing on pitch, to hear harmonies, to distinguish between major and minor, intervals, and more – all of which is taught through fun songs. They use full body movement to really feel and internalize the musical elements they are learning about. I took piano lessons for ten years and in the two years of attending Let’s Play Music classes with my son, I have learned things about music theory that I never knew! This program is seriously awesome!”

The “Let's Play Music” program is for children to begin anywhere from ages 4 to 6 and is enrolling now for Fall 2020.
