Is Your Glass Half Full or Half Empty? | A New Perspective

By Crystal Hoffman - Murfreesboro Mac Kid Publisher April 26, 2020

There are two ways to be in life: glass half empty or glass half full.  I tend to be the “half full” type with an optimistic attitude and determination to reach my goals.  During this quarantine, though, it has been extremely difficult to maintain this state of mind.  It seems that every day (or sometimes every hour) there is a new struggle or challenge that we encounter that has to do with the virus.  What are we to do in times like these?  Do we try to keep pressing on with our positive outlook and fortitude or do we throw in the towel and just wait until all of this is over to get back to normal?

Unfortunately, I don’t have the answer.  Every day is different for me and my family as I'm sure it is with you and yours.  Some days, we are full of energy, motivation and patience.  On those days, which seem few and far between, we get school work done, we are pleasant to one another, we play, we eat, we love – we are taking a hold of our day and making the best of it.  Other days are not so bright and cheery.  The “other” days are the formidable days that I cringe and refrain from waking up to. Those are the days where we didn’t get to sleep well the night before, we woke up on the wrong side of the bed, and Murphy’s Law has already been playing mind games with us since 6:00 AM.  They suck!

My point is, every single day is different.  And that is okay!  No one has a guide or instruction manual on how to handle this whole COVID-19 situation. Not one person has figured it out. We are all navigating unchartered territory.

While the future is murky and undefined right now, we will inevitably get there.  If our glass is still half full, we can move onward and grow from our experiences.

Virginia Satir, an American author and family therapist, said this about living life: ” Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is. The way you deal with it is what makes the difference.”

I challenge each of you to remain half full during these trying times, even when half empty seems to be the easier path.  We owe it to ourselves, our families, and our communities!

Cheers, my friend – and may your glass always be half full (or overflowing)!
